The Agarikon family has strong anti-inflammatory properties with antibacterial and antiviral properties. Researchers tested 11 strains of Agarikon found in North America and discovered strong activity against swine flu (H1N1), bird flu (H5N1), and herpes (HSV1, HSV2) viruses. The ancient Chinese believed that Ganoderma mushrooms promoted longevity, and the Greeks called Agarikon the elixir of long life.
 +
 +
Agarikon grows to resemble a very large beehive and grows like a fruit hanging from the places where branches connect to trunks on old tall trees. Historians have noted that Native Americans mashed the fungus and used it as a medical remedy for a variety of ailments. The ancient Greeks knew about the medicinal qualities of agarikon, suggesting in an early text that it was useful for combating a host of diseases. Thereafter in Europe and the U.S. it became known as a treatment for several lung ailments including consumption (tuberculosis).

Indeed, Paul Stamets' work with U Illinois confirms,  some level of effectiveness against tuberculosis, as well as cowpox, swing and bird flu, and the virus that causes herpes.
 +

Given its demonstrated level of effectiveness as an anti-viral, anti-biotic, I've wondered about cultivating the Agarikon; unfortunately this is something that's only found in old-growth forests.

Chaga, as well, demonstrates anti-viral, anti-microbial, and anti-cancer properties.  Grows from a burl on a dying birch -- for the Betulinic acid, which seems to be responsible for at least part of the effect:
 +
Chaga supports the integrity of blood vessels and provides soothing properties in times of irritation. This can be helpful for those suffering from pain, neuropathy
 +
GI -- stomach/ulcers, intestinal
 +
Also functions, due to Beta-D-Glucans, "Biological Response Modifier" - -much like an adaptogen, as an immune system modulator;  boosts when low, if in overdrive,  slows down; reckon could help with sustained allergic reactions.  We may need to talk GcMAF at some point -- not now.

Anti-cancer, immune booster, due as before to polysaccharides

maitake inhibit alpha-glucosidase, an enzyme that breaks down starch and simple sugars to glucose. By inhibiting this enzyme, glucose absorption slows down in the body. Not surprisingly, many oral anti-diabetic drugs are alpha-glucosidase inhibitors

Also rich, like most of these we've hit, in Vitamin D:
 +
 +
To increase the vitamin D2 content of your mushrooms, place them gills-side-up under direct sunlight. Sliced mushrooms will yield even more vitamin D2, as this method increases surface area and allows more ergosterol to be exposed to sunlight.

One, to restore our appreciation for the decomposers & reframe "waste" (dead straw, fallen log) as just another form of energy available.

* What's the difference between the solar charge controller and one for wind turbine ?
 +
 +
This was curious to me as well, so I checked in to it -- it seems the difference in charge controllers is less about the way the charge is applied to the batteries, and more that a turbine needs to have a reliable load at all times.  If it's not charging the battery, a wind controller will divert to a dummy load -- unlike solar charge controller, which can simply effectively disconnect the panels.
 +
 +
Without a reliable load, turbine can spin out of control, causing catastrophic failure.

* What kind of high tunnel structure does he recommend for high wind situations?
 +
 +
I use high tunnels which are manufactured by Tunnel Vision Hoops in Cleveland, Ohio.  Their bows are constructed out of thicker metal then most competitors and they offer an all metal, all included kit which is straightforward to assemble. Our original tunnel has withstood 75 mph wind guests without issue and I have heard of them withstanding close to 90 mph wind guests.
 +
I prefer Gothic style high tunnels which are 72 feet long x 30 ft wide.  We live in an area where we get days of 50mph sustained winds so some of the design chararcteristics are to suit our location.  I am putting together a short pdf which highlights some of the  things I have implemented to make a tunnel more secure in a prairie environment.

Good thing about moving water, the whole liquid has to reach 0' before it freezes.  That said, I do heat my tank, not just because diurnal swings were too much for healthy fish, but because goldfish basically go into hypometablic state, hiberante, don't eat much, or produce much waste, which is the whole point.
 +
 +
In fact, after I lost a few fish, I started actively manage the tank on both sides of temp:  in summer, I started cooling the system to keep the goldfish from kicking into Spawning behavior, which was 76-78' iirc.  They started beating up on each other.
 +
 +
Let me speak to that, by saying there are fish, like Rainbow trout, that would do better over the winter.  Some folks will swap out their tilapia for rainbow trout over the winter.
 +
 +
An IAF, though, would be interested in a robust fish:  perch, catfish, largemouth bass.  These can be fine in both summer and winter temperatures.
 +
 +
We're also interested in breeding these guys, to have a reliable source of protein and keep the aquaponics running, unless you have a convenient & well-stocked pond...  This enters a whole new world that I've not explored.  Fish breeder?  get in touch.

There is a guy named Jeremiah Robinson who has an interest in cold-weather aquaponics.  He runs "FrostyFish.com" and has plans on how to upcycle an old freezer into a well-insulated fish tank.  He's selling them, but.  Try to get him on show.

Video

This episode was an experiment, crafting several videos then compiling them into the podcast audio. Not sure what yet to think.

Quote

"The poorest nations, already beset by man-made disasters, have been threatened by a natural one: the possibility of climatic changes in the monsoon belt and perhaps throughout the world. The implications for global food and population policies are ominous."

-- HENRY KISSINGER, Address before the UN General Assembly, April 15, 1974
