The 9x19mm Parabellum (9mm, 9mm Luger, .355 caliber) is a very popular round in pistols, submachineguns and camp carbines. It is small, light, and has very little recoil.

Appeal to Survivalists

The 9mm cartridge is used by many military and police forces around the world, leading to the speculation that ammo will be readily available after a disaster. Weapons using the 9mm cartridge are often light weight and have a large magazine capacity. Felt recoil is medium to low. This makes this caliber popular for Every Day Carry. Also due to the number of carbines in 9mm available one can mate a pistol and rifle together due to commonality of ammunition.

Carbines using 9x19mm

The list of pistols that chamber this popular caliber is too long to list. However, the list of carbines/rifles in this caliber is short enough to provide a list for those interested in mating a pistol of this caliber with a carbine.

  • Beretta CX Storm
  • Calico M-900 Liberty I (50 round) & Liberty II (100 round) - (That's a lot of zombies down before reloading!)
  • Colt Commando/Bushmaster/Olympic Arms AR-15 type 9mm carbine
  • Feather AT-9 Carbine
  • Hi-Point 995
  • HK MP5 type 9mm carbine
  • Kel-Tec SUB-2000 (Even can be set up to use different pistol magazines to match what your sidearm is)
  • Marlin Model 9 Camp Carbine
  • Ruger PC-9 carbine (Uses Ruger P89 pistol magazines)
  • Uzi 9mm carbine

Ballistics Characteristics

Remington ballistics tables (Federal and Winchester are similar) for the standard 115 grain JHP load show a muzzle velocity (MV) of 1155 fps and a muzzle energy (ME) of 341 ft. lbs. out of a pistol. The trajectory of this load shows a mid range rise of .9" over 50 yards, and 3.9" over 100 yards. In a 16" carbine barrel the muzzle velocity jumps significantly. Depending on the load MV can be from 1400 - 2000 fps.
