A paper published in the free access journal Climate of the Past argues, that volcanic eruptions and climate change are in part to blame for the bad times, pushing people to leave, hoping in a better future, for the new world.

A first migration wave from the German states to America occurred in 1816. The previous year the volcano Tambora in Indonesia erupted. The volcanic ash and gases injected by this powerful eruption into the higher layers of Earth's atmosphere, acting there like a blanket for the sun's rays, caused a dramatic drop of temperatures worldwide. In Germany, the summer of 1816 was cold and wet, almost 5°C below longtime records. Rainfall caused landslides all over the Kingdom of Württemberg, destroying the local vineyards and so the local economy. Crop failures were reported all over Germany. Where authorities couldn't provide relief and help, the starving people collected wild herbs in the woods or caught mice on the destroyed fields. The winter 1816-1817 was long and hard, contributing to the widespread misery. Many families decided to emigrate, hoping to find a better life in America. The German states, trying to reduce welfare costs, promoted also emigration, paying the poorest of the poor to leave the country. Only during the summer of 1817, the chaotic weather seemed to normalize again. However, 1816 was just one exceptionally bad year in a general period of climatic insecurity. The entire period of 1300 to 1850 is referred also as Little Ice Age, as the climate was cooler and more unstable as today. Years of poor harvest, followed by starvation and disease, were common.
